 | Horizons Records announced today they are at last re-issuing The Hope Song, John Ryan with Orchestra, the legendary cult classic which has been the jewel of many a record collection, sometimes fetching thousands of dollars as it passes hands on Ebay. The record, recorded live at the Brass Guitar in the mid-1990's, features Ryan singing pop and jazz standards in his unique, faux-lounge style which, at first blush, seems quite bland, but blows away the hipper-than-thou cafe society crowd. Backed by the understated Rodney Greaves' Love in a Diner Men's Room Orchestra, Ryan croons, swings, teases his way through classics like Tom Jones' What's New,Pussycat, Andy Williams' Moon River, Captain & Tenille's Do That To Me One More TimeI Am, I Said. and, of course, the incomparable Neil Diamond gem Not for everyone; are you hip enough? |

I've had a scratchy vinyl copy of this, but really looking forward to hearing Ryan on CD. The interaction between him and Greaves' orchestra is sooooo cool. Makes you feel like you were there.
Picked up this CD and the rare DVD over the weekend down in Greenwich Village where Ryan was playing Saturday night. Amazed at the deep sultry sound of Dolores Fanelli who joined him from the audience during the Billie Holiday set. If I closed my eyes I could just see Billie and the great Satchmo crooning away.....doesn't get any better than that.

i had the great pleasure of seeing john in person at the meadows last year.....not the theatre, just a little dive down on the berlin turnpike. anyway, it was great. especially enjoyed john's rendition of "i am, i said, dammit" - slightly different than the original neil diamond cut but very typically jr. hope he performs at the apple harvest festival this year; after all, he's our native son!
Ryan is one of a kind. Many would say that is one too many, but once you hear that devine voice, all is bliss. Wish I could have caught the Fanelli set, must have been quite a night! Great CD!
